The afternoon heat had set in when her father helped Cara and Adelaide into the farm wagon filled with their trunks, baggage, and Babbette.

Weariness settled over Cara, burdened with Lan’s secret and mourning what should have been a perfect homecoming. At least Adelaide seemed happy. Cara caught her companion stealing glances at her father when she believed herself unobserved. Dear sweet Adelaide. She deserved some happiness.

What glorious a sight is the first glimpse of a place one thought never to see again, Cara realized, openly crying as she spied her beloved childhood home. It had weathered, but the immaculate lawn was dotted with serenely grazing sheep, and white doves perched on the eaves of the house. The exposed wood was whitewashed and the brick had aged from red to a warm shade of russet. The two-and-a-half story manse beckoned to her, pulling her back into the folds of her beloved family. Cara uttered a silent prayer to the Lord, thanking Him for His goodness.

Carroll brought the wagon to a halt before one of the many barns.

Curious servants and workers surrounded them as her father helped her, and then Adelaide, out of the wagon.

Adelaide’s blush wasn’t lost on Cara when the woman’s hand accidentally brushed her father’s arm. But the observation faded in light of all the wonderful people of the Glen welcoming her back—some faces she remembered, some new—but all displayed beaming smiles.

Cara recognized Sam and Joe, Lan’s hunting companions, now men, tall and brawny. Joe held the hand of a little boy who was his exact image.

Their father, completely gray of head, hugged her so fiercely she feared a rib cracked. There were more hugs and hand shaking, and then April, once the scullery maid, plump and smiling, approached with a babe on her hip and holding the hand of an older woman.

The woman, slightly stooped, but still moving spryly, gazed at Cara

Cara cried out as she recognized the twinkling gaze. Rushing forward, she uttered a cry of delight, immediately enfolded in the arms of Maggie MacGarrow.
